Magnesium carbonate is an odorless white powder with a variety of industrial uses. It is found in nature or as a manufactured substance. The chemical formula is MgCO3. It is slightly alkaline rather than acidic. It is insoluble in water but changes and foams in dilute acids.
Most of the commercially produced raw magnesite is converted into caustic calcined magnesite and sintered magnesite and used in making basic refractory bricks.
Raw magnesite is significantly involved in the production of magnesium salts, such as magnesium sulphate, especially in agriculture.
Its use in the pharmaceutical industry, chemistry, cement, car tires, paper and sugar industries shows that it is a much-needed raw material.
